Test         AvailabilitySpecimens         accepted 24 hours, 7 days a week. Smear results available         same day if received by 12:00 Mon-Fri; ;next working day         if received after 12:00.

Culture results: Preliminary after 7         days if negative; updates if positive; Final after 6 weeks

Additional         InformationCulture         includes acid fast smear on all sources except blood.         Culture is for acid fast organisms only.
Specimen         Requirements
Specimen         TypeAll specimen         types EXCEPT the following: 1) Swabs of         the throat, mouth and oropharynx 2)Genital Swabs 3)         Vomitus 4) Urine specimens collected after 12:00 noon.

LabelingRefer to         Pathology- 'Collection of Specimen'. Indicate source of         specimen, date and time of collection on label.
TransportDeliver all         specimens to the laboratory promptly after collection. If         transport will be delayed, refrigerate all specimens except         the following: 1)Spinal Fluid and other body fluids: hold         at 35C 2)Genital specimens; hold at room temperature or         35C 3) Blood in isolator tube: hold at room temperature         4) Gastric specimens: deliver to laboratory immediately         after collection. The acid content of gastric specimens         requires that they be neutralized for optimal recovery of         acid fast organisms.
